Given we all LOVE a little cake in our life (… I mean, how could you not right? :-p), we thought there would be no better way then to kick off with one of the best cake studios in Melbourne – Meet Miss Ladybird Cakes, a.k.a. Gina.  Gina and her team run their deliciously sweet studio out of McKinnon in Melbourne, and have quickly grown to be one of the most sought after cake decorators in town.  Known for her clean style with an added difference, Miss Ladybird Cakes has created a countless number of timeless treats, and there’s no sign of slowing.

We interviewed Gina to learn more about her experience, and get her expert knowledge and tips for all our beautiful brides and grooms to be.  Get ready to be inspired lovers.


Tell us about yourself? How did you end up in cakes and owning your own business?
I am proud and lucky that this is all I have wanted to do since I was really little.  I have spent all of my working career towards this goal.
Can you tell me about your experience as a cake decorator in the wedding industry? How do you find it?
Making cakes and the cake industry has become an incredibly busy industry of late, so in my experience we are constantly looking at how we can improve and keeping up with trends.
What do you love the most about your job? 
Constantly creating.
What is your career highlight to date? 
Opening my own studio.
What is your most favourite cake that you’ve created, and why?
As much as I love all the pretty cakes that I make, my favourite is the zombie storm trooper I made for my husband’s 30th.
If you had to describe your brand in one word, what would it be?
What type of bride and groom do you typically attract?
Relaxed couples that want something super tasty.
How would you explain your style?
Clean but a little country.
What does a typical workday look like for you?
Each day is a different step in the production process for e.g. one day of the week I spend all day butter-creaming all of the cakes, heading out to source flowers and fresh seasonal fruits and possibly a delivery.
What are the most challenging aspects to your job and business?
When to say no.  I work 7 days a week and find it hard to step back, switch off and relax.
What’s the biggest mistake you see couples make all the time?
Assuming photos of cakes are certain sizes.  They often underestimate or over estimate what the size of their cake would be.
What’s the best piece of advice you could give a couple?
We strive to make the best product for our couples, let us guide you through the design process and this will get you the best cake.
What trends do you think will be big in the year ahead?
Metallics, rich pinks, muted greens and lots of textures.
Is there a fad that you think couples should stay away from?
No, in the end the couple should have the design and style that they love.  Regardless if it is a good fad or a bad fad.
What are you’re 3 tips to couples for finding their perfect cake supplier?
Look for a reputable supplier, budget to $4.50 per guest invited and make sure you taste the product.
So where to from here – what is your goal and vision for the next 3 years?
Continue to expand and produce cakes of high quality.
